Now in the video game world, it’s more prone to have some
sort of story relating to something that has been written, for the exceptions
of movies based on stories such as, “Star Wars,” “Harry Potter,” and a bunch of
superhero movies. But there is one game that I came across that was really
good, and did relate to a story written in real life that was published a
really long time ago, the game is called “Dante’s Inferno” and is based on
Dante Alighieri’s “Divine Comedy.” In the video game, you go through an
amazingly detailed setting of what the gaming designers and gaming producers
tried to bring Dante’s imagination to a virtual reality, and make it their own.
This game kind of
follows what the whole story of what the difference of being heavenly or hellish is, what the difference from being good or being evil is. Dante, the protagonist, is fighting through hell to save the one he loves, Beatrice from the clutches of the fallen angel, the unholy one, Satan, Lucifer, the Devil himself. Dante has committed sins before when he was fighting for the holy land of Jerusalem as a crusader, and was somehow killed and was greeted with death, but did not want to die, so he fought and won, and was rewarded with deaths scythe, so he could go home to see Beatrice. Unfortunately he finds her dead along with his father, and notices when a ball of light emerges out of her but shows her soul being taken from Lucifer. He follows them to take her back, and goes into a church that leads down where all these demonic soldiers and creatures that guard the “gates of hell.” As he goes in to find her, he is sent down into hell, just like the story’s different books, inferno, purgatory, and paradise. The video game follows what the deadly sins are alongside with a story of their own to make it more exciting, with characters from the story like Virgil, and different characters, such as Dante’s father, Beatrice’s brother, and many more people that were from the past that apparently went into hell and is either punished or absolved by Dante. Dante finds himself in even more problems the more he goes down into hell. He finds out that the pure Dante he thought he was, committed all these sins, including cheating on Beatrice, which is why she goes with Satan into the depths of hell. Dante still finds the courage and reasons to fight for her. But in the story when she is found, they both ascend and go into paradise after being cleansed in purgatory, and in the video game, Dante fights the Devil to be absolved of all his sins and absolve Beatrice. Later on to find he to be rescued by Beatrice in the end, and all went well as the story ended from there. So there is a chance for video games to have some faith in books, even if it has to be one of the oldest ones you can find. A good passage that I remember in both the book and the video game was, “The more a thing is perfect, the more if feels pleasure and pain.”(Alighieri Inferno canto vi 105) and I found that it was a true statement for both the story and Dante in the video game, because in this entire adventure to rescue someone who is to his mind perfect, she felt more pain and pleasure than anyone else. But we all feel that way sometimes. It’s not so hard to figure out that when someone feels betrayed or loved, those feelings of pain and or pleasure will further come about. But the biggest thing here is, how can you tell that the opposite of video games is books, if good is opposite to evil. The true opposite is indifference, no matter how you look at it. The opposite for books is no books, the opposite for video games is no video games, the opposite of good is no good, and the opposite for evil is no evil. But in a world we live in, where we have to have another word except the same one, we come up with the opposite of heaven is hell, when it’s not true at all, the opposite of heaven is not hell, it is what you believe the other life that is not heaven is going to be. It may be hell, but not the one you think the church or how everyone depicts it.
